"The flagpole at the Veterans Memorial is a very controversial item to many Lompoc residents," noted Ella Forney, past commander of William "Bill" Proud Poet 211 of the American Legion. "Contrary to belief, the flagpole at the Veterans Memorial Building never was located at the 'square' at Street and Ocean Avenue," she advised the throng attending the unveiling of a plaque proclaiming landmark status for the building. Fourth District County Supervisor Dianne Owens' representative, Marlene Cartter, unveiled the plaque after Forney narrated a history of the building, which was built in 1938 and officially opened on Feb.

6, 1937. "The flagpole originally located at the square is now, and has been since 1943, located at the Carnegie Library now the Lompoc Historical Museum at the corner of Cypress and South Street 'The flagpole at the Veterans i Memorial Buillding has never been moved from anywhere," Forney said. Frederic Murphy, (Santa Barbara) architects on March 2. 1936, distinctly show the complete plan of the courtyard including a detailed drawing of the flagpole and base. "Sorry folks, the flagpole is part of the original plan and another landmark from the 30's." However, she said thedSrst flag flown from the pole disappeared Just before July 24, 1939 and is still missing.

The building at and Locust streets was erected with federal and county funds on a site partly donated by Legion Post 211. Its cornerstone bears only the year, 1936, and no specific date. Under a Jan. 11, 1937 agreement between the Legion and the Board of Supervisors, three rooms were reserved for the Legion and could not be rented and rules required inside and outside guards at large public functions. On Sept 8, 1983, Post 211 installed a memorial in the courtyard in memory of the lost sailors and the survivors of the seven ships wrecked on Sept 8, 1923 at Point Pedemales-Honda Point off what is now the southern part of Vanden-.
